Rachel’s Legacy: Nature Writing to Celebrate and Save the Earth

Tips for Growing Nature Writers, Scientists, and Environmentalists

“If facts are the seeds that later produce knowledge and wisdom, then the emotions and the impressions of the senses are the fertile soil in which the seeds must grow.”
-- Rachel Carson

Nature writing with students promises rich learning experiences that can grow a lifelong love of science and writing. There are many of us who may never be engaged by the facts of science but weave them in a story that tempts the senses and emotions, and we may be charmed for life.

Nature journaling supported by the sharing of beautiful nature writing by others can inspire students and re-inspire ourselves. We encourage you to try nature journaling with your students and share freely from your own writing. We have provided some of our favorite links to excellent samples of nature writing, about the value of it, and strategies for teaching it.
